He doesn’t even have to look in the mirror anymore when he does up his necktie.  He doesn’t even have to think about what he’s doing, his hands an educated mystery.  Also, he just doesn’t look in the mirror anymore.  No.  Why would he?

He has a new face, that’s for sure.  Not his but the face of those that paid him, and since they pay the face, the pick the face – as the saying goes.  Gosh, does it even matter?  The chin is square and strong, maybe.  The eyes are resolute and sharp, probably.  His hair is thick and dark, specked with mature gray, likely.  It’s all  beneath the covering designated by rank, date, ceremony, application and occasionally, whim.

The old face was sloughed down the drain.  He’s sure of that.  The tie is done, a neat triangle as if his throat were slit and he bled silk.

Get out there and lead!  Carry the standard high!
